Recently, the guys at beautiful.blogs.com interviewed Josman. With their kind permission, we have posted their interview of Josman here.
1 Who is Josman?
- full name
- place of birth
Josman: I’m a very private individual who doesn’t enjoy being in the spotlight, so I would prefer not to give any personal details. The only thing I will reveal about myself is that I’m based in England.
How and when did your career as cartoonist kick off?
Josman: It all happened by chance really. Up until a few years ago, art was just a hobby for me. Then In 2002 I was toying with the idea of doing an erotic web comic just for fun, but knew I wanted to do something a little different. That’s when I came up with “My Wild & Raunchy Son”, a story about a boy who seduces his father. It was a little risque I guess, but the reaction to the story was amazing. I was deluged with emails from guys saying how they loved the comic and wanted me to continue the story, so I ended up doing a second installment. I guess word got around about “My Wild & Raunchy Son” because soon I was getting offers of work, most notably from Handjobs Magazine for which I’ve been contributing comics and artwork for the last three years. I eventually gave up my boring day job to become a full-time illustrator, and I haven’t looked back since. I feel incredibly lucky to be doing something that I really enjoy and getting paid for it.
Why did you decide to concentrate on homo erotic cartoons?
Josman: As a child I was always drawing super-hero comics, and had this dream that one day I would be working for DC or Marvel Comics. It didn’t quite work out that way. By the time I left school, I had lost interest in super-hero comics and wasn’t even sure I wanted to pursue a career in art. Some years later, I discovered the art of Tom of Finland. His incredible work really appealed to me, and I wanted to do something similar — purely as a hobby at the time. Drawing naked men was my main wank material in my teen years, so it was a natural progression for me, I guess.
A lot of your stories are dealing with sexual father and son relations. Where did this idea come from?
Josman: Well, I’m fascinated and turned on by incest. I realise that some people may be disgusted by that, but I think the fact that it’s such a taboo is probably what pushes my buttons. My biggest turn on though, has to be twins - I mean, come on, who wouldn’t like to watch a pair of gorgeous twins getting it on with each other and then joining in for a threesome? That’s my idea of homo heaven! Alas, I haven’t experienced twins, brothers or father/sons yet, but I live in hope…
The men in your stories are all well built, well hung guys. How does this reflect your personal life and choice in men?
Josman: It’s true that I am mostly attracted to tall beefy muscular guys. However, big cocks are a bonus and not an essential requirement in my men. I have to admit though that as I mature, I’m finding that my taste in men is becoming somewhat more varied. As the saying goes “Variety is the Spice of Life”, and it’s so true!
What is your main inspiration?
Josman: I’m inspired by many artists. I mentioned Tom of Finland already, but there are also a lot of great craftsmen who have influenced me. I never went to art school - I’m completely self-taught - and studying the works of all those great artists has inspired me to push myself to try and be the best of my abilities. I’ve still got a long way to go before I’m really happy with my artwork. The learning process will probably last a lifetime.
How close are your stories to your real life?
Josman: Not close at all, actually. Even though most of my comics have an incest theme, that is not the case in my personal life. All my work is pure fiction.
How difficult is it, physically and mentally, to get these cartoons on paper? In other words, how many times do you have to stop yourself because it is getting too exciting?
Josman: Good question! When I was creating “My Wild & Raunchy Son” I was wanking all the time, and it took me a long time to complete the story. These days I’m trying to be a little more professional in my approach to creating comics. If I get a hard-on while drawing, I just leave it alone. (lol)
How long do you think should a good story be, and how long does it take you to create it?
Josman: Well, the majority of my comics are short stories, and I enjoy doing those, but a longer story allows me to develop the characters a little more. I would love to do a long graphic novel one day, but I’m a slow worker, so it would probably take me ages to do one. The process of creating a five page comic usually takes me between ten to fourteen days.
Do you use real guys as models for your characters?
Josman: Not really. The characters I draw are mostly from imagination. Big square jawed men appeal to me, so that’s usually how I draw the dads. The boys have to look cute and fresh-faced, of course.
What is for you the difference between erotica and porn?
Josman: Erotica and porn are the same thing, in my opinion. ‘Erotica’ is just a posher term for porn — just like ‘penis’ is a posher version of ‘cock’.
Please react to the following words: Love and sex
Josman: This is going to sound sad, but I’ve never been in love. I shy away from relationships, probably because I’m too scared of commitment. As for sex, we (the human race) are so lucky that Nature has blessed us with the joys of sex. It’s a real shame that some fucked up individuals invented religion to try to make us feel guilty for enjoying it.
Fantasy and reality
Josman: Without fantasy, reality would be unbearable.
Superman and Batman and Robin
Josman: My favourite super-hero threesome!
Can you tell us what project you are currently working on?
Josman: None at the moment. Due to some health problems recently, I’ve had to take a long break. I’m hopeful that I’ll return with some new comics very soon. In the meantime, I’m happy to say that H & O Editions of Paris — www.ho-editions.com — has published two books of my stories which have previously appeared in Handjobs. The stories have been translated into French and are available in two 64 page books, Dads & Boys volumes 1 & 2.
Do you have any peculiarities or obsessions we absolutely should be aware of ?
Josman: None that I’m aware of — my family and friends would probably disagree, though!
We want to give you the opportunity to say something nice, or naughty, to our readers, so go ahead.
Josman: Don’t take life too seriously. Your time on this planet is way too short, so smile and enjoy every moment.
